New by Popular Demand: ZIP Code Lookup, Radius Drawing, Improved Labels & More

Over the last few months, RandyMajors.org Maps has added many new map features at the request of our users. This post is a quick rundown of these new ways you can explore and interact with the maps!

Find ZIP Codes

Easily find ZIP Codes on the ZIP Codes map tool using the “Find ZIP Code” box in the upper left corner of the map. Simply type the ZIP Code and click the “GO!” button. The map will take you there and highlight the ZIP Code, like this:

You can also use “Find ZIP Code” on any other map tool where ZIP Codes are visible, including where you can show ZIP Codes in the “Show other layers” box in the lower left corner of the maps.

You can even find 3-digit ZIP Codes and Post Office box and other point-type ZIP Codes.

Draw a Radius

Another commonly requested feature is to be able to draw and save a map radius. This can be useful if you are trying to select map features within 5 miles of a point, for example. Here, we have drawn a 5-mile radius around a point:

You can draw a radius using either the “Selection Tools” button or the “Draw & Measure” button in the lower left of the map.

When using “Draw & Measure”, you can then save the radius drawing to your account for use in other maps and in making selections.

The example here shows ZIP Codes selected using the radius drawing. Notice the features you select are highlighted in yellow on the map and listed in the “Results from Map” box below the map, for easy copy/paste into other programs. (For ZIP Codes, you can even get the latest population for your selected ZIP Codes as well!)

Follow the simple on-screen instructions as you try these features, which will guide you on which buttons and tools to use for different purposes.

And more…

We’ve also made several other usability and performance enhancements, including the following:

  • Map labels now draw much faster. Try it by checking the “Show labels” box in the lower left corner of the map. Additionally, map labels are now shown for any of the other map layers that are visible on your map, while still emphasizing the labels that are the primary topic of the map (e.g. counties, township range, etc.)
  • The “Use Current Location” button in the upper right corner of the map has a new Active mode for Monthly Contributors that keeps your location updated while on the move, helping you know when you’ve entered a new city, for example.
  • Measurements appear more dynamically as you draw shapes on the map using the “Draw & Measure” button in the lower left corner of the map.
  • Need more help? Use the new “Search FAQs” box at the top of the Help page, and as always, get in touch if you have any questions or need help.

There are many more enhancements and new features, which we will cover in future updates.

Happy mapping!
