US Census data is now available in two new ways in the map tools:
- For the location you’re currently viewing, Census links are shown in the blue panel above the map
- When using the Selection Tools, you can see the total population for the ZIP Codes you select on the map
Let’s take a look at an example of each!
Census links in the blue panel above the map
First, here’s where to find the Census links in the blue panel above the map:
In the example above, both the city name and the county name are clickable links. When you click one of these links, the page will scroll down and update the Census information panel, like this (it sometimes takes a few moments to fetch data from the Census Bureau):
Census data is available for U.S. cities, counties, civil townships and ZIP Codes and is composed of the latest available year from the US Census Bureau.
Total population for a selection of ZIP Codes
The second type of Census data now available is the total population for a group of ZIP Codes you select on the map. Here’s how it works:
- Go the the ZIP Codes tool and navigate to your area of interest
- Click the Selection Tools button in the lower left corner of the map (read tips on using the Selection Tools, including how to select using a radius)
- Draw a shape and double-click to finish drawing; in a few moments, ZIP Codes will be highlighted in yellow and will be listed below the map
- Click the “Get Total Population” button below the map
Here are screenshots showing the above steps:
Just like that, you have the total population for the ZIP Codes you selected! The population data is from the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey’s (ACS) latest available year.
Enjoy exploring US Census population and demographics in the map tools — and happy mapping!
